RaiderZ takes place in the once prosperous and powerful kingdom of Rendel that is now being overrun by marauding monsters. The following backstory was revealed:
- Tranquillity died on that day. In the few seconds it took for the strange visitor to traverse our pristine atmosphere and end its heavenly voyage upon the bleached sands of Lymorsch, everything changed. Nomadic tribesmen, woken by its piercing descent, were blinded by the impact and forced to flee in the fiery wake of the fallen star.
- News travelled fast, and within days, Roland, regent of the Kingdom of Rendel, had dispatched his alchemists. Their task was to investigate the cataclysmic impact. Having established a research camp far away from the capital, the arch-alchemist Horen studied the mysterious object for over a year in the company of his scholarly comrades. Whilst the origin of the stone remained unknown to them, it became apparent that its essence was of a magical nature. Renamed the “Prime Stone”, for they foolishly believed that it may hold the key to the creation of the universe, this heavenly object seemed endowed with very particular characteristics, chief amongst which was its ability to transmute earthly substances.
- With skill and cunning, Horen was successful in creating a powerful alloy, a metal he called “Belaxium”. Hurrying back to inform the king, he found the monarch pleased with the discovery and obstinately convinced that the Prime Stone was indeed a gift from the gods, a token of their approval of his expansionist hunger. Within weeks, the alchemist was able to produce numerous weapons fit for a king from the Belaxium they had created. Armed with these new implements of war, the army of Rendel expelled the nearby Volo tribesmen, forcing them to flee far into the North.
- Dark clouds would nevertheless gather, as they often do when mankind attempts to wield power that it does not understand. Unbeknownst to Roland, Horen, and his alchemists, the Prime Stone had brought calamity upon the idyllic landscapes of our home. From the midst of the Lymorsch Desert, corrupted creatures spewed forth, each more hideous than the next. Warped by madness and dark energies, these beasts contaminated others, and a dark plague spread across the land. Even within the walls of the capital, the lament of the diseased spread, and it was not long before Roland issued an edict to isolate the contamination. To this effect, the Grand Wall of Silence was erected to protect Rendel from the spread of this mysterious disease.
- But it was too little and too late, a puny effort in the face of the inevitability of destiny. A fatal blow had been inflicted upon the very life force of our planet. Even with a complete cessation in production of the now accursed Belaxium, a ban on all weapons made from this malefic alloy, the abandonment of the research camp, and an absolute prohibition on travel near the contaminated area, the king’s efforts seemed in vain. In this dark age of doom and malady, jealous and ambitious nations came to hear of the mighty substance which had granted Rendel its victory over the Volo and vied to acquire it for their men-at-arms.
- Five miserable, long years have now passed since the day when the fallen star scorched the land. The king’s authority has waned, his army is in disarray, and the enemy strikes from within. The disease spreads from coast to coast, and crazed beasts, corrupted by the wrath of gods, scour the land. With former alliances forgotten, our neighbours are now naught more than ravenous wolves awaiting the first sign of weakness in a once proud stag. It is surely no wonder that the glimmer of hope fades and flickers in the reckless hand of a leader wandering aimlessly through the storm. The clouds continue to amass, and the common folk say that their appeal for a saviour has fallen upon deaf ears. In this hour of need, I pray that the gods prove them wrong.[1]
Gameplay[edit]
RaiderZ offers classic MMORPG gameplay features such as guilds, quests, dungeons, crafting and player versus player battles. The game uses an unconventional non-targeting combat system where players actively participate in combat, similar to The Exiled Realm of Arborea. In addition to that, players will be able to cut or break off special body parts of boss enemies and use these against them. Another difference from other MMORPGs is the unique character progression. There are no set classes and after reaching level 10, players can chose from a wide range of skills to develop their characters in any way they want.
European Publisher Gameforge emphasizes that RaiderZ is "not a casual game" but instead is very challenging for even the most experienced players. One example of this is the fact that players will be able to fight against giant boss monsters on their own, even though it is advised to engage them in groups.[2]
No set classes[edit]
During character creation, players will be able to choose from four basic combat styles: Defender (Tank), Berserker (Melee DPS), Cleric (Healer) and Sorcerer (Range DPS).[3] However, after reaching level 10, they can choose to learn any skill from any of the four styles, allowing them to specialize their character the way they want to.[4] For example, players could create a character that wears plate armor and uses magic attacks or one that uses healing magic while swinging a large sword. There are rumors about additional combat styles but none of them have been confirmed yet .
Action combat[edit]
RaiderZ blends gameplay features of MMORPGs with Third Person Action Games, allowing players to actively participate in combat. Instead of the typical point & click controls used in most MMORPGs, RaiderZ requires players to precisely swing their weapons, dodge enemy attacks and maneuver around opponents to get into a better position. However, using special skills that can be placed into a skill bar still plays a big role in RaiderZ.[4][5]
Boss fights[edit]
Fighting against strong and big boss enemies is one of the main features of RaiderZ. Whether in instanced dungeons or within the open game world, players will encounter special opponents that will require skill and teamwork to overcome. Some monsters will be hundreds of meters high with the player characters barely reaching their toe nails.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7A-PbAPGoPE&feature=share During battles, theses monsters will lose certain body parts (e.g. horns, claws) that can be used as shields or weapons or will provide special abilities for a short period of time. Bosses in RaiderZ also use several special abilities like swallowing or grabbing players at random.[4][5]
Crafting[edit]
New pieces of armor and weapons are only gained through the crafting system. Players will have to fight against enemies or trade with other players to obtain component parts that are used to create new equipment. The majority of these items will be bound to the character that made it, however, the resources and the appropriate recipes won't.[4][5]
There currently is not much information available about the PvP system of RaiderZ. In an interview with TheGamerHub, European producer Rudiger Moersch mentioned classic duels, big open PvP areas, PvP quests where, for example, one team has to escort an important NPC while the other team has to kill him, and hinted at more unique things that are still in development.[6]
Musical instruments[edit]
Players will be able to learn to play certain musical instruments such as guitars and join other players to create beautiful music. These instruments will be combined with quest lines and once you have finished the relevant quests, you can buy the instrument and start playing different notes.[7]
